They Play a Major Role
Supporting the Bee Population
Bees are an important link in the ecosystem and are responsible for ecosystem health and biodiversity by pollinating many of the flowers and vegetables that the earth (and humans) need to thrive. As a result, they play a major role in supporting agriculture throughout the country. One out of every three bites we eat were pollinated by bees. Many species of honey bees are threatened or in decline. Habitat loss, climate change, chemical pesticides, invasive plant species, and diseases and parasites all contribute towards threatening bee populations.
Learn How You Can Help
Saving the Bees
There are many things we can do to help bees: Plant a bee garden, Avoid using pesticides and herbicides, care for and plant trees (which provide food, habitat, and materials for building hives to bees), create bee baths, cultivate a section of unmulched soil for ground-dwelling bees to move into, leave old tree trunks, logs and hollow plant stems for bee habitats, and support local beekeepers and organizations.
